So why haven't I been blogging???

So why haven't I been blogging???

Well, because there hasn't been much new/exciting to report!  Guess in that case no news is good news, right???  I have been seeing some PTO Wildcat yard signs up around town - what a great thing!  We have ours at the end of our driveway (somehow we managed to get it into the DRY ground).  Hopefully soon the signs will be dotting yards all around Fayette County.

My son has been running hard in Cross Country.  I found out that good ole Coach Redditt is in his 70s!  What a trooper - he even ran in the Cotton Pickin 5K race for the Cotton Festival.  Speaking of that....just realized that I never blogged after that race!  The FWCHS Cross Country team competed and did VERY well!  Three runners finished in the top 10 overall and many won trophies for their age groups - including Coach Redditt!  It was so nice to see them in their uniforms and trying their best for the team (and for a good cause - Fayette Cares).  There's a photo of some of the runners below and good ole Coach Redditt.  :)

That's about it...for now.  Still very happy with the decision to put my son at FWCHS this year.  Even though he's tired from the racing and homework, he reports that he's happy and has made several new friends.  That's good news to my ears...

There's an energy in the air....

There's an energy in the air....FWCHS Open House 9.9.10

Hi there - remember me? ....the lady that said she would post EVERYDAY and now that has trickled down to about once a week?  Okay, please forgive me!  I have 4 kids...one of which just got settled into college, my kids participate in sports, Scouts, dance and church, not to mention homework and other family activities.  We are ALWAYS going somewhere and I am lucky if I have time to brush my teeth each day!  (I do by the way, don't mean to scare anyone off!).

So, last night was FWCHS Open House night.  It was a very LONG night, but thankfully not boring.  It started at 6pm and I was about 15 minutes late due to my after-work drive back to Fayette County, but I was warmly greeted by my PTO friends at the entrance to the school and directed to the cafeteria.  THE CAFETERIA WAS PACKED - STANDING ROOM ONLY.  I heard that this was not the usual crowd - I think support for this school is growing and that is very good news!

Mr. Hicks introduced several department chairs (NGA, Guidance, etc.) and they briefly spoke on their departments, scholarships, the yearbook, etc.  The PTO spoke to announce that they are selling yardsigns for $8 - what a great idea!  We bought one and will proudly display it in our front yard.  I thought it was a great fundraising idea and affordable for most.

Everyone was pushing the FWCHS website, so I might as well give it a plug again here...

I spoke to the webmaster and he said he updates daily.  It's a great source of info!

After all the speaking and instructor introductions (which were amusing and personable), everyone was invited to start off in their child's homeroom and then change classes every 10 minutes after that.  My son lead us to the Ninth Grade Academy (basement hall off the gym) and we met with each teacher except one that wasn't there.  It was nice to put faces to names and to hear about anything that my son needed to improve, etc.  I recognized several parents from West Jr. High and some kids that I've known for years in the upper grades that came up to give me a hug or say hi.  It was really a nice evening and everyone seemed hopeful and helpful - thus my title "there's an energy in the air".  I really feel like Mr. Hicks and the instructors at FWCHS have something good going this year.  I'm not sure if it's like that every year, but I have had nothing but positive attitudes when dealing with the administration and staff at FWCHS so far and they are all very passionate about improving student performance.  I feel like this school is on it's way to something great - I just hope enough people realize that and decide to stick around to ride on the public school train!

Update on soccer...progress.  I spoke with a teacher who Mr. Hicks suggested coach, and I have to do some legwork to gauge interest before he will help coach, but I'm up for that.  He also gave me another name of a teacher who might want to help.  If we can get it started it probably won't be competitive this year, but hopefully next year! Yeah!

Signed,

Still Encouraged by FWCHS in Oakland, TN :)

Whew - what a week!

So, last week was a blur!  I was definitely ready for my Labor Day weekend!

Regarding FWCHS...there wasn't much new other than my son got to sign up for the clubs/organizations he wanted to be involved with this year.  He was allowed to sign up for 3 different groups and I was encouraged at what he picked - Chess Club, Beta Club (have to maintain a 3.0) and Library Club (I'm not sure he knows what he's getting into but there is a trip involved!).  He's excited for meetings to start.  Not sure how often/when they will be yet.  I think 3 is enough - especially since he's also doing sports this year.

Studying has picked up.  He's having to memorize the periodic table in science - not fun!  I remember those days and how confusing some of the abbreviations could be.  He's trying to stay ahead of the testing by studying a little each night.  So far so good...grades have been flowing home and they are all looking pretty good!

Open House is this Thursday night.  I'm excited to accompany him!

Each morning when I drop him off (now at the back of the school by the gym stairs) it's pretty "high schoolish".  Kids are primping at their cars before going in and then finally trudging up the stairs to class.  There is always an adult monitor outside in order to make sure everyone is going in as they should be, etc.

I haven't been able to make it to anymore football games, but there is another Cross Country meet tonight.  The season for both sports is well underway.  Wish I had more time to attend games/meets!

Nothing exciting to report - hopefully I'll have more to add after the Open House on Thursday night!
