It's almost the end of the year - who deleted all my blogs???
Okay, okay, I'm fibbing! I haven't written since what - December? Good lord! I've had a few requests for links to the blog as people are considering where to place their children next year for high school. Let me some up the 2010-2011 school year at FWCHS by saying this...
I asked my son the other night if he still wants to go to Fayette Ware Comprehensive High School next school year. He said, "Yes!". If that isn't testament to a great 9th grade year, I don't know what is! He has learned a lot this year, participated in two sports, joined a couple clubs and made a bunch of new friends. EVERYONE that I have dealt with at the school - including students - have been courteous, polite, helpful and friendly. I'm not just trying to blow smoke here - this has really been my experience.
For more info, please check out the school's website: www.fayettewarehighschool.com or please feel free to call me at 901-335-8578 (even if you don't know me) or comment here to ask any specific questions, etc. I would be happy to discuss with you as you make this important decision in your son/daughter's life.
By the way...the FWCHS PTO now has a Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/PTO-Fayette-Ware-Comprehensive-High-School/128845347181564 . Look there for updates or other friendly faces you might know.
I suggest that, besides reading this or other blogs/online sources, you go check out FWCHS yourself with your son or daughter. Make an appointment or just stop in and speak with Mr. Hicks, look around the school, talk to some of the teachers and students. You just might find a high school home for your son or daughter there (as I have). :)
I'll continue to TRY to write, but my garden is calling and summer break will be here before you know it....GOOD LUCK with your future high schooler no matter where they decide to attend school! Remember that private schools are great and everyone has a right to choose, but we have a diamond in the rough right here in the Fayette County public school system. It's a little gem I like to call FWCHS :).
A mom's perspective...Fayette Ware High School
Blabberings on my son's experience starting as a freshman at Fayette Ware High School (and maybe some other fun facts too!).

Did I say I'd write daily? Weekly? Monthly?
Did I say I'd write daily? Weekly? Monthly?
I guess you can call me a liar, but I had every good intention :). As most of you parents can imagine, life always seems to get in the way of those activities which you enjoy for YOURSELF rather than for others. My list of wish-I-could-do-but-never-can-seem-to-find-the-appropriate-time-to-do would include (among several other items):
1. Writing this blog.
2. Reading nightly.
3. Going to bed by 10pm each night.
4. Exercising (okay, I'm also not motivated for this one, but you know..)
5. Shaving my legs as often as they should be (okay, I'm also not always motivated for this, but it does take time and when you can't even get into bed by 10pm what are you to do???)
So....how goes it at FWCHS you ask? Well, I reply. My son has really had a great year so far. There have been a few little irritations - a guy in one of his classes bugs him/teases him and he has a hard time not biting back (told him not to unless he really NEEDED to), but you know what? I had boogers in my classes when I went to high school as well. Didn't you? There's really only one boy that gets under his skin. The rest of the kids he seems to either be friends with or at least he coexists with. No real problems or complications and his grades have been great. I do notice that not a lot of homework comes home, but I honestly think this is because he does a lot in class (remember...they are 90 minute classes) and/or on the bus (he claims) coming home. I guess time will tell when he takes his TCAP testing and/or ACT testing.
We travelled to see our son race in the Cross Country State Championships in Nashville in early November. Both the boys and girls teams from FWCHS competed. They didn't place high, but what an honor to even make it to state! The coach was very pleased and bought each participant a race t-shirt. The kids all stayed in a hotel the night before the race and ate out together, etc. My son said the funnest part was the hotel - he roomed with two other freshmen and I think they probably should have had less fun and more sleep, but it was an adventure he'll never forget! There were several families that made it to the race to watch the kids and the coach remarked that it was the MOST involvement from parents/families that he'd had in all his years of teaching. What a great thing, but a sad thing - I know families at the private schools around Fayette County are always at events, etc. Hopefully this is a good sign of increased parental support, however.
The team ended it's season at Milano's in Somerville for a team pizza party. Mr. Hicks (the principal) came and bought the kids their drinks (parents bought everything else) and talked with the teams about how running take perseverance and dedication and he was proud of each of them. It was really a nice gesture that he came and it wasn't lost on the parents or kids. Coach Redditt spoke to the kids as well and encouraged them to work hard, stay in shape and come back strong again next year. He also told them that he is at the school every afternoon if they want to come to condition. This man does this out of the kindness of his heart - he certainly isn't getting paid big bucks to be there for these kids!
Next up is track season since my son didn't try out for Basketball. He's already been approached and given info from the track coach, Mr. McCurdy. In fact, Mr. McCurdy handed out a folder with stats and photos from last year's season. It was very impressive. He expects a lot and won't let kids who are disrespectful participate unless they change (this stems from a conversation I had with him at the pizza party - he came to support the XC team as well). Track starts in January - I guess we'll be super busy as a family again then.
A new block of classes will start in January as well - that is great because Matthew is a typical boy and he could use the change in schedule. I believe this will really help him fit more into his high school career AND make him more attentive while in classes. Instead of stretching a class out through a whole year, there are longer class times and different classes each semester.
That's about it for NOVEMBER! :) I guess my New Year's Resolution will be to actually write more often like I said I would. I must let you in on a secret though....I almost NEVER keep my New Year's Resolutions!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

2 months in and still here....
Again I go with the premise...no news is good news! It's been awhile since I've logged on, but my family has been VERY busy!
FWCHS life has become routine for my son at this point. He's still in the middle of Cross Country season and doing well. His coach is pushing for the best out of the runners and they are all performing well at meets. State is November 6th in Nashville - hope some from the Wildcat team make it there! One of the Cross Country parents has been working hard redoing the trophy cases in the track house and I think that's great - sometimes it takes every one's involvement to make a school a better place.
The second edition of the FWCHS newsletter was distributed earlier this week. I'm glad I'm involved with the PTO in this way - it has really helped me to meet other parents, students and teachers and I feel I am doing my part to contribute to the betterment of the school. There was so much news and input for this edition that it was 4 pages! The newsletter can be found on the PTO section of the school website: www.fayettewarehighschool.com .
That's about it for now. My son still likes school (even though his classes are getting tougher). He told me the other night, "Mom, I'm tired. I'm also tired of being tired." I just chuckled and said, "Get used to it because after high school is college and then real life. You will be tired for a long time!". Hey - that's the reason I'm not blogging everyday too! :)

So why haven't I been blogging???
So why haven't I been blogging???
Well, because there hasn't been much new/exciting to report! Guess in that case no news is good news, right??? I have been seeing some PTO Wildcat yard signs up around town - what a great thing! We have ours at the end of our driveway (somehow we managed to get it into the DRY ground). Hopefully soon the signs will be dotting yards all around Fayette County.
My son has been running hard in Cross Country. I found out that good ole Coach Redditt is in his 70s! What a trooper - he even ran in the Cotton Pickin 5K race for the Cotton Festival. Speaking of that....just realized that I never blogged after that race! The FWCHS Cross Country team competed and did VERY well! Three runners finished in the top 10 overall and many won trophies for their age groups - including Coach Redditt! It was so nice to see them in their uniforms and trying their best for the team (and for a good cause - Fayette Cares). There's a photo of some of the runners below and good ole Coach Redditt. :)
That's about it...for now. Still very happy with the decision to put my son at FWCHS this year. Even though he's tired from the racing and homework, he reports that he's happy and has made several new friends. That's good news to my ears...

There's an energy in the air....
There's an energy in the air....FWCHS Open House 9.9.10
Hi there - remember me? ....the lady that said she would post EVERYDAY and now that has trickled down to about once a week? Okay, please forgive me! I have 4 kids...one of which just got settled into college, my kids participate in sports, Scouts, dance and church, not to mention homework and other family activities. We are ALWAYS going somewhere and I am lucky if I have time to brush my teeth each day! (I do by the way, don't mean to scare anyone off!).
So, last night was FWCHS Open House night. It was a very LONG night, but thankfully not boring. It started at 6pm and I was about 15 minutes late due to my after-work drive back to Fayette County, but I was warmly greeted by my PTO friends at the entrance to the school and directed to the cafeteria. THE CAFETERIA WAS PACKED - STANDING ROOM ONLY. I heard that this was not the usual crowd - I think support for this school is growing and that is very good news!
Mr. Hicks introduced several department chairs (NGA, Guidance, etc.) and they briefly spoke on their departments, scholarships, the yearbook, etc. The PTO spoke to announce that they are selling yardsigns for $8 - what a great idea! We bought one and will proudly display it in our front yard. I thought it was a great fundraising idea and affordable for most.
Everyone was pushing the FWCHS website, so I might as well give it a plug again here...
http://www.fayettewarehighschool.com/
I spoke to the webmaster and he said he updates daily. It's a great source of info!
After all the speaking and instructor introductions (which were amusing and personable), everyone was invited to start off in their child's homeroom and then change classes every 10 minutes after that. My son lead us to the Ninth Grade Academy (basement hall off the gym) and we met with each teacher except one that wasn't there. It was nice to put faces to names and to hear about anything that my son needed to improve, etc. I recognized several parents from West Jr. High and some kids that I've known for years in the upper grades that came up to give me a hug or say hi. It was really a nice evening and everyone seemed hopeful and helpful - thus my title "there's an energy in the air". I really feel like Mr. Hicks and the instructors at FWCHS have something good going this year. I'm not sure if it's like that every year, but I have had nothing but positive attitudes when dealing with the administration and staff at FWCHS so far and they are all very passionate about improving student performance. I feel like this school is on it's way to something great - I just hope enough people realize that and decide to stick around to ride on the public school train!
Update on soccer...progress. I spoke with a teacher who Mr. Hicks suggested coach, and I have to do some legwork to gauge interest before he will help coach, but I'm up for that. He also gave me another name of a teacher who might want to help. If we can get it started it probably won't be competitive this year, but hopefully next year! Yeah!
Signed,

Whew - what a week!
So, last week was a blur! I was definitely ready for my Labor Day weekend!
Regarding FWCHS...there wasn't much new other than my son got to sign up for the clubs/organizations he wanted to be involved with this year. He was allowed to sign up for 3 different groups and I was encouraged at what he picked - Chess Club, Beta Club (have to maintain a 3.0) and Library Club (I'm not sure he knows what he's getting into but there is a trip involved!). He's excited for meetings to start. Not sure how often/when they will be yet. I think 3 is enough - especially since he's also doing sports this year.
Studying has picked up. He's having to memorize the periodic table in science - not fun! I remember those days and how confusing some of the abbreviations could be. He's trying to stay ahead of the testing by studying a little each night. So far so good...grades have been flowing home and they are all looking pretty good!
Open House is this Thursday night. I'm excited to accompany him!
Each morning when I drop him off (now at the back of the school by the gym stairs) it's pretty "high schoolish". Kids are primping at their cars before going in and then finally trudging up the stairs to class. There is always an adult monitor outside in order to make sure everyone is going in as they should be, etc.
I haven't been able to make it to anymore football games, but there is another Cross Country meet tonight. The season for both sports is well underway. Wish I had more time to attend games/meets!
Nothing exciting to report - hopefully I'll have more to add after the Open House on Thursday night!

Dear Neglected Blog...
Dear Neglected Blog...
So, can you blame me? I have 4 kids, remember??? :) Last week was super busy as my oldest (FA son) went off to college. THAT was an experience! I think I cried about half of the way home. I've talked to him more since he left, however, than I usually do. Don't know why I am so upset! Made me realize though just how precious and fast those high school, junior high and elementary school years are. They are important! That's why, in my opinion, you (as parents) should be involved. Those years won't be around forever - be present while you can! One good thing about dropping my oldest off at college is that all my other kids got excited for when they will go to college (except my daughter says that she wishes it didn't have classes there LOL!).
Not much to report over the past couple of days. My son is bringing home some really great grades and his teachers have sent the papers home with him to show us. We also got home a PTO newsletter last week. I heard from another Cross Country mom who is starting a parent group for XC (Cross Country) and track and wants help. She wants to try to get the XC/Track trailer spruced up nicely. Maybe painted...maybe murals on the outside...definitely cleaned and organized better on the inside. Coach Redditt has so much memorabilia from over the years...he needs a little help making it shine! There was another XC meet on Monday and I missed it because I went to the wrong place! The team placed first and we had about 7 runners who were in the top 10 in their race! My son was one of them...so proud! The XC team seems like a little family to me...they joke and clown around together and get along. My son's one of the youngest and I'm glad to see that the older kids aren't picking on him, etc.
The Open House for the school is coming up next week and I'm hoping to make it in order to finally get an official tour from my son. I've seen the main parts of the school, but he's excited to show me the rest. He apparently is making quite a few friends and usually has a funny story to tell me about them most nights. He is also very tired. Between XC and getting home late before getting started on homework he's had less sleep than he did when in Jr. High. He's still adjusting. I told him I've been tired SINCE high school. That was no consolation!
There was a fight in school last week...I posted about it in the comments section. Basically about 8 kids got in a fight in the morning and were sent to Alternative School because of it. This was the same morning as the "search" (which was coincidental - it was preplanned search). I was disappointed to hear about it, but as Mr. Hicks told me when I asked him about it a "Please know that ALL is well...there are always a few who spoil things." I'm not worried because of this fight. I hate to have to write about it, but I did promise to be honest. One of the parents I talked with about it said that it is very unusual to have another fight - this one and the Starburst fight (one of her boys graduated from FWCHS and one is still there - they've been involved with the school for 3 years now). Hopefully those involved learned a lesson and will think twice before fighting again. This one may have been over an Almond Joy bar...not sure, but I do know that I'm not worried about my son's safety because of this fight. Mr. Hicks is ruling the school with a heavy hand of justice - I'm sure it makes the other kids think twice before losing their temper. Mine has been threatened within an inch of his life...:)
That's about it for now. This week has been ALMOST as busy as last week, so I can't promise a post tomorrow, but I will try! Homework is getting harder and helping my son with it is eating into my blog time!
